May 9th, 2009 is International Migratory Bird Day—a day dedicated to celebrating and supporting migratory birds. This could be as simple as educating yourself about the bird that migrate through or to your area, attend a local function or coordinate a festival to celebrate the birds and pass along information. If you choose the latter—the IMDB may be able to help you pick a particular theme or gather materials and information.12
International Migratory Bird Day or IMDB started in 1993 by the Partners In Flight, agencies who together wish to help ensure healthy populations for the 350+ migratory birds that travel between North America and wintering grounds in South and Central America, Mexico, the Carribean and the southern United States. IMDB is celebrated in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Central America every year on the second Saturday in May.
This year’s theme is “Celebrate Birds in Culture.”
